12:55 pm PT Afternoon Wrap: Ending impressive week on solid note :A solid performance for the market on Friday capping off a shortened but impressive week. The top performing index on the week was the Dow which gained 2.3% from last Friday's close to today's midday highs. Bringing up the rear with a still solid gain was the Nasdaq Comp at 1.6% (S&P 500 +2%, Russell 2000 +2%, S&P 400 +1.7%). The Dow came within 22 points of the Aug/6 month high at 10719 and the S&P 500 pushed within 2.73 of its Aug/52-wk high (SPY retested at 124.74). The Nasdaq Comp has paused near the 62% retrace of the Aug slide at 2178 (session high 2177) leaving it 42.68 points or roughly 2% under its Aug peak. Sector strength today has come from Energy (Coal +2.7%, Oil +2.7%, Natural Gas +2.1%, Oil Service +2%) along with Gold +2.6%, Housing +1.9%, Steel +1.5%, Insurance +1.4%, Paper +1.3%, Utility +1.2%, Tobacco1.1% and Broker/Dealer +1.1%.
