4:20 pm : Stocks rebounded nicely following two days of consolidation as broad-based buying spurred by upbeat corporate news (e.g. earnings, dividend increases, M&A activity) helped stocks regain some upside traction amid above-average volume. A recovery in overseas markets, especially a 2.3% rebound in the Nikkei 225 following a two-day decline of nearly 6% which had many worried about a pending collapse, also calmed investors' nerves before the opening bell.

With regard to sector strength, Energy turned in the day's best performance, as Schlumberger (SLB 114.87 +6.55

2:03 pm PT Central Garden to acquire Farnam Companies for $287 mln; expected to be earnings neutral in FY06 (CENT) : Co announces that it has agreed to acquire�Farnam Companies for approx $287 mln, plus $4 mln for the purchase of related real property. Farnam is a manufacturer and marketer of health care products primarily for horses, household pets, and livestock sold through over-the-counter and veterinary channels. In its fiscal year ending Nov 30, 2005, Farnam generated net sales of approx $160 mln. The acquisition is expected to be earnings neutral for FY06.
2:02 pm PT Matrixx Initiatives resolves Arizona litigation (MTXX) 22.60 1.07 : Co announced the parties to product liability suits against Matrixx Initiatives and Zicam in Arizona have reached an amicable agreement which ends the litigation. Under the agreement, approximately 340 plaintiffs who alleged loss of smell arising out of their use of the Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Gel product will dismiss their cases with prejudice in return for participating in a voluntary settlement program which will determine how each plaintiff's claim should be resolved in accordance with a medical protocol. The Co will be paying $100,000 to administer the Program and $11,900,000 to fund the awards which will be made.
